I am a founding member and board member of Montreal Serai, a non-profit webzine focused on arts, culture and politics. Montreal Serai began in 1986 as a local theatre and arts collective that went on to produce a print magazine before going digital. The collective's driving force has been creating new communities, new arts, new solidarities, where voices once relegated to the margins take centre stage.
Based in Tiohtiá:ke (Montréal), the webzine is recognized as an inclusive and welcoming space in which both emerging and established artists and writers can engage. Serai (from the Persian word, caravanserai) means a resting place for travelers.
Montreal Serai - Editorial and Advisory Board
I have written short stories, poems and informative articles that have appeared in Montreal Serai and other publications. The following are some highlights of my work that have been published in Montreal Serai Magazine.
Published Work
Chilloo
A poem that comes out of work with psychedelic medicine and internal family systems; the rescue of an exiled inner child and the unburdening of the pain and intergenerational trauma carried by him. The poem is accompanied by photographs chosen from my personal archives.
Gender identity, binarism, and quantum entanglement
Editorial exploring themes of gender identity through a conceptual lens. In exploring this theme, our intent was not to suggest a link between quantum physics and gender identity. However, we were curious about what we might learn from the evolution of knowledge around quantum mechanics, the study of subatomic particles and their behaviour, and how, at a conceptual level, that might also enhance our evolving understanding of gender identity.
A Tribute to Rana Bose
My obituary for Rana Bose, co-founder of Montreal Serai, after his passing.
Running from the Family
Introduction for a transcript of a talk by Kalpesh Oza, South Asian Queer activist. He was the first openly queer South Asian man that I had ever encountered. We met in the 1980s, as fellow artist-activists, when we were both writing for and acting in a series of plays by Montréal Serai.
I am a Cliché
Review of a film about British Punk Icon, Poly Styrene, produced by her daughter, Celeste Bell.
